Singapore, December 2010 – The highly anticipated World Classic golf course at Laguna Resorts was launched with a soft opening on 1 December 2010, allowing members the opportunity to be the first to experience the new golf course. For the moment, the Course is only opened to limited flights to allow the Course to mature and for additional work to be carried out if necessary. This also means that the use of the Course is strictly reserved for Laguna Resorts members only at this time, where guests will be welcomed at a later stage.

With a design inspired by some of the very best golf courses around the globe, the World Classic was created by renowned golf course architect Andy Dye. The layout boasts a stadium effect with golf vistas and huge spectator hills, offering a bird’s eye view of six to seven holes from one strategic location. This allows spectators an opportunity to track and observe the game with ease, without the need to follow players on foot.

The World Classic course can be stretched from 7,500 to 8,000-plus yards, making it on track and well-equipped to attract and accommodate some of the very best international golfers and tournaments. Every hole has been designed to be memorable and a true magazine cover shot.

Commenting on the course, Peter Kwee said, “I had a vision for the World Classic that it should be a true one-off in the region and something which Laguna Resorts members could play on with pride and passion. Having played on over 200 golf courses throughout the world and even on some of the very best courses, only three to four holes will be remembered. Andy Dye shared my vision and we met before the project began to share our thoughts on how this course should be.

We looked at images of golf courses around the world; we discussed individual holes and picked the very best of each to inspire and create the 18 holes for the World Classic. Ultimately, I believe we have created a new course that is truly unique and one that many will talk about for some time to come. It could probably be the toughest golf course in the region and we hope that it would encourage golfers to keep coming back to “tame” this course.”

The World Classic features a notable 257 bunkers including S-bunkers which have been planted generously across the course. The terrain of the course rises and falls, enhancing the beauty and ambience of the course and increasing the level of challenge to golfers. A hybrid grass new to golf courses, Paspalum Platinum, has also been planted on all the greens with 419 Bermuda grass planted on the fairways while roughs and bunker slops are “flanked” with Zoysia grass.

Additionally, the World Classic is one of the few golf courses in the region and the only one in Singapore that employs the Rainbird decoder system – a computerised irrigation system used to control the irrigation of the golf course. The Rainbird Pumping System will allow the staff to manage with pinpoint accuracy and have total control on the coverage of irrigation.

Additional news on the World Classic course will be released in the near future. For more information on Laguna Resorts, visit – http://lagunagolf.com.sg/
