The epic match-up has arrived once again. NUS and NTU to face each other again on the same court they both won their champion title last year and the year before. NUS and NTU both chose to deploy an aggressive 3-3 defense to counter the each others’ speedy playing style.

On a side note, this match-up also featured Lydia Soo (NUS) to face her twin sister, Sarah Soo (NTU) and elder sister, Anna Soo (NTU) on the opposite end of the court.

The 1st 6 minutes of the game saw 3 NTU players and 2 NUS players receiving yellow cards. The game went on neck-to-neck with both teams very careful with their attacking options. On top of that, both goalkeepers superbly kept their posts from getting heavily bombarded. NUS had a streak of 3 goals in a row before NTU countered with one and ended the 1st half with NUS ahead of NTU with a shaky one point lead.

NTU started the 2nd half with an equaliser goal. The flustered NUS’s situation worsened when one of their teammates was sent off to serve her 2-minutes suspension. NTU took advantage of their numerical superiority and slotted 2 more goals. NUS regained composure and equalised with a 7m penalty shot and a winger shot. On the other hand, NUS did not convert their chances even when NTU had 2 players less on the court due to 2-minutes violations. The game intensified when the score was levelled at 13-13. NTU managed to execute a fast break putting them ahead once again.

NUS was in trouble, at 2 points deficit, with only 3 minutes left on the clock. NUS pulled one back to make it 14-15. An equaliser now will be sufficient to put NUS ahead of NTU in the overall standing to be crowned champions because NUS had a total of 61 goals scored over the course of this tournament whereas NTU only had 55. Nonetheless, NTU managed to score the very last goal of the game with a fast break and defended their title with the final score 16-14.

“I’m glad that we won. Even though, we have a number of new players, the team have performed a lot more than what I have expected from them”, commented NTU captain, Rose Tan, while catching her breath after all the loud celebrations with her fellow teammates.
