Jansenites almost toppled SRC in close-fought 2-2 draw
The hectic fixture list took its toll on current champions – Singapore Recreation Club (SRC), who played two matches in three days.
In their first match of the week on Friday (1 April), it was no fooling around for the black-clad players, coming up against a resurgent team Jansenites, with the current title holders only mustering a draw.
Playing like men possessed, Jansenites got in the zone with two rapid fire goals in the space of two minutes – 53rd and 57th respectively. They were not afraid to take the game to their illustrious opponents, with the majority of players from the national youth set-up. It somewhat represented a coming-of-age game for the youngsters, as they matched the champions in terms of pace and skill.
SRC managed to avert a major upset in the 68th minute, collecting a vital point for the team.
Goal-fest Sunday
Meanwhile, Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) unleashed their frustrations on an unfortunate Ceylon Sports Club (CSC) in their 6-1 dominion of the latter. The recently promoted CSC managed to get a consolation goal through Narinderjit Singh’s short corner effort in the 48th minute, saving his team’s blushes as they continued their pursuits this season.
It was a similar story for the Indian Association (IA) youngsters, with the score 8-3 humbling by free-flowing Jansenites. However, current Singapore’s national coach Solly Casoojee, who was present to watch the games, observed that some of his Jansenites players were not performing to their full potential despite the score line.
Showdown
The game that Coach Solly anticipated to be a “cracker” was the last one of the week – a showdown between title-contenders Police and title-holders SRC.
Showcasing top talents from the Singapore hockey scene, it was indeed a display of skills from both sides. While, goals from Haikal Eiman Supa’at and Kenny Tan managed to get the better of SRC custodian Robin Ng, SRC’s Harjeet Singh continues to threaten with trademark blink-and-you’ll-miss wrist shot that ripples the back of the Police’s net.
The result of this match means SRC have now earned two draws in three games, while Police have won all of their matches so far, drawing only against SRC.
