Having committed his future to the club last Friday after interest from Aston Villa, the Spaniard has now turned his attention to strengthening his squad and avoiding another battle against relegation.

Martinez knows that certain players are likely to be moving on, and is currently in the process of identifying those he wants to bring in.

“From our point-of-view we need to look at how we finished last season and the final 15 games,” he told the club’s official website.

“That’s our level and that’s how we want to start the new campaign – having intense competition for a place in the team is an essential element in any team’s squad.

“As with every club in the summer transfer window there may very well be players departing and players arriving, so our work will be focused on making sure the squad is stronger than last season and offers new dimensions.

“That allows us to play in a number of different ways and we’re all excited about following and identifying different players to represent Wigan Athletic.”

So far Liverpool and Manchester United have been the big spenders, recruiting England Under-21 stars Jordan Henderson and Phil Jones respectively for over £15m each.

The emphasis being placed on up-and-coming players so far in the transfer window has not gone unnoticed by Martinez.

“It’s interesting that the first major signings of the transfer window have been of young players,” he said.

“Always it’s important for teams to look at the short-term but you can see now the bigger picture is also being taken into consideration.

“Big money has been spent and I’m sure that will have a knock-on effect in the league, so I’m expecting a busy window right up until the end of August.”
