Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) dominated their opponents with a streak of three wins for both categories to be crowned champions in the very 1st Inter-University Tchoukball Championship 2011, held at Nanyang Technology University (NTU) Sports Hall, on 18th September 2011.
The four local universities; NTU, SIM, National University of Singapore (NUS) and Singapore Management University (SMU) took part in this inaugural event and the games were played with three periods of 10 minutes instead of the usual three periods of 15 minutes.
This event also featured some ex-national Tchoukball players namely Geh Si Yuan(SIM), Ang Ben Yong(SIM), Royston Khoo Teng Thai(SIM), Huang YuChi(NTU) and Serena Khong Wei Jia (NTU).
SMU men’s managed to hold back NUS with a slight deficit of two-points in their final encounter for the day, despite only having two months of training. Although their female counterparts did not shine as much, their sportsmanship and their enthusiasm towards the sport were highly commendable.
In the deciding game between NTU against SIM men’s teams, the cohesive SIM made a great start and took a comfortable lead of 17-10 at the end of the first period with fast court switches and well-placed shots that caught NTU off-guard. The score snowballed to 27-15 in favor to SIM at the end of second period. In the third period, SIM continued to unleash their dominance and ended the tournament with a staggering 42-20 win.
“We hope to create the awareness for this new and rising sport among the newer generation in Singapore“, said Jeff Ang, General Secretary for the Tchoukball Association of Singapore (TBAS), moments before he presented the trophies and medals to all the winners.
For the women’s category, NUS snatched the first runner-up position, ahead of NTU even though they both were tied in their head-on encounter. Unfortunately for their men’s team, NTU defeated NUS by a one-point lead and that was sufficient to put them ahead of NUS in the final standings. The inexperienced SMU only managed a consolation fourth-placed finish for both categories.
The 2 champions will represent Singapore in the upcoming 2nd Asian University Tchoukball Championships at Tainan, Taiwan on 11th -13th November this year. They will be put to the test with tough challenges from universities from Macau, Hong Kong, South Korea and more.
Stay tuned for more updates from Tchoukball as the four universities will face-off against each other once again, but with the addition of Polytechnic and Institute of Technical Education (ITE) teams in the 2nd Inter-Tertiary Tchoukball Championship 2011 which will take place on the 15th October 2011 at ITE College East.
