LNSO 2010

  • Well done Singapore!

To begin with, it was truly heart-warming to see the Singaporean team of Yao Lei and Shinta Mulia Sari clinch our first ever Super Series title in 20 years. When I was there, the atmosphere was electrifying and for once in a long while, I truly believe that Singapore sports is moving the right way and most importantly, we are moving forward. Many will argue that Yao and Shinta are hardly Singaporean in nature as one is a China native and the other from Indonesia. I beg to differ as they donned our Singapore flag nonetheless and competed with their hearts and a mental strength not seen in many Singaporean athletes in the recent past. We’ve started a glorious run by winning the World table tennis championships, beating the world champions China in their own domain. Today, we saw a new era of sporting excellence as we fought, clawed, shed tears and shed blood for the nation we so truly love and have come to call our home. After 20 long years, the Republic is once again placing ourselves in the global sporting arena as a force to be reckoned with.

Singapore’s Yao Lei and Shinta Mulia Sari have done the Republic proud by beating their Chinese Taipei opponents Cheng Wen Hsing and Chien Yu Chin 11-21, 21-18, 21-19. After a dismal first set, the Singaporean pair looked to be out of contention against a visibly confident Chinese Taipei duo. However, they managed to dig deep and found their range as they began a brilliant fight back against their opponents. At match point, their nerves were visible as they squandered match points with unforced errors. However, their mental strength prevailed in the end as they completed a 11-21, 21-18, 21-19 victory to reach the finals of the Li-Ning Singapore Open 2010.

  • Badminton : Fourth seed Boonsak edges past Peter Gade in three sets to reach the finals of the Li-Ning Singapore Open 2010

Fourth seeded Boonsak Ponsana edged past Peter Gade in three extremely tight sets to earn a place in the finals of the Li-Ning Singapore Open 2010. After dropping the first set, Boonsak admitted that he had to “change his style of play and be more consistent” in order to get the better of Peter Gade. Admittedly, Peter mentioned that he had a few chances in the second set to close it out but had misjudged a few line calls, resulting in un-needed dropped points and ultimately causing him the match. With his 20-22, 21-17, 21-16 win, Boonsak now faces Sony Kuncoro in the finals of the Li-Ning Singapore Open 2010.
